Frequently Asked Questions about Yield Estimator

This FAQ applies for Flash, Edge, Industrial Versions

 

  • What is Yield Estimator?

    • Yield Estimator is a series of software and hardware systems that works in tandem to count fruits, shoots, bunches, buds, trunks in a vineyard or an orchard.

    • It is a well crafted service solution for each and every customer.

  • What YieldEstimator is not?

    • It is not a standalone software you can buy and install and use for eternity.

  • How does Yield Estimator work?

    • Since agricultural land is often in rural areas where there is no internet connectivity, YE works with a technology called Artificial Intelligence at the Edge (AIE). AIE uses advanced AI methodologies to compress data using various filters to have AI models.

    • Those AI Models runs on specifically designed low power requiring hardware.

    • With multiple camera inputs, the system detects, counts, and tracks multiple variations at the same time.

  • What are the limitations of the Yield Estimator?

    • Occlusion. This system uses a standard RGB vision to detect bunches, shoots and other variables. If they are covered with leaves you can’t see it, what you can’t see, we can’t. A well pruned vineyard is the perfect for the system to work.

    • We've also developed several other methodologies that will be made public when their patent applications are approved, soon.

  • Are there any papers that explaining how it works?

    • In progress.

  • Can we attach it to a normal tractor?

    • Yes!

  • Can we attach the system to any other row width compatible vehicle?

    • Yes. It works on Van, Suv, Tractor, ATV, UTV, AGV...

  • Can we use capture videos handheld?

    • You can capture the videos handheld using gimbal systems.

  • What is the minimum size of Yield Estimator AIE System?

    • It can be as small as to fit inside a backpack.

  • What type of camera do we need for Flash?

    • We recommend GoPro Hero 10 or 11 Black if you want GPS trails, if not, DJI Action 3.

  • Why do we need GoPro Hero 10 or 11 Black, or DJI Action 3?

    • They have the best Image Stabilization technologies on the market and Sony cameras are not available on all of the markets.

    • Gimbal systems doesn't perform well on field conditions.

    • Smartphones are compressing videos too much to be used for high-quality processing.

  • Can we use other cameras?

    • Insta360 ONE R 360 Edition

    • Insta360 ONE X2

    • Insta360 Evo

  • What is the video resolution and frame rate works with Yield Estimator?

    • Up to 5kph/3mph 1080p60, 2.7k60, 4K60

    • Between 5kph/3mph - 10kph/6mph = 1080p120

    • Between 10kph/6mph - 15kph/9mph = 1080p240

    • It is dangerous to drive faster than 15kph in a vineyard.

  • How large of an area can I scan in a day with Flash?

    • If the weather is sunny, you can drive between 10:00 and 17:00, in 7 hours at 5 kph you’ll be able to collect data at max 14 hectares @ 60fps, in a day per vehicle.

    • 10 kph 28 hectares @120fps, in a day per vehicle.

    • 15 kph 42 hectares @240fps, in a day per vehicle.

  • Is it possible to scan during night?

    • Yes, but you need to make serious modifications on your vehicle.

      • For example, you will need high powered LED lights and specially designed camera holders for more cameras. If you are interested in providing this as a service, contact us at partnerships@yieldestimator.com

  • What happens if I collect data in cloudy weather?

    • The data will be grainy with noise and it’ll be harder to process for us. We process them but do not offer above 90% accuracy warranty.

  • Does having H265 compression impact data quality?

    • To some extent but not much. It is easier to transfer h265 video.

  • What is the main difference between Edge and Industrial?

    • Edge processes data on the vehicle, Industrial on premise.

  • What is the relative cost difference between Edge and Industrial?

    • With modifications on the tractor and special hardware requirements, Edge costs 4x more compared to Industrial.

  • How can we control multiple cameras inside the vehicle?

    • GoPro Hero 10 and 11 Black is compatible with smart remote, it can manage up to 5 cameras at the same time.

  • Can we use a single 360 camera?

    • Yes. Resolution must be above 3840x1080 @ 60fps.

    • Recommended camera is Insta360 X3 or Insta360 ONE RS.

  • Do you have a case to prevent cameras from overheating?

    • Short answer is not yet. You can remove battery and battery door and attach a fan, something like this, click here.

  • How can we power cameras longer?

    • You can use 12V Socket to Type C power adapters and high quality Type C PD cables that support at least 3A power delivery.

  • Can it work on all vine training methods?

    • It can work on, single & double cordon, single & double guyot, Geneva double curtain, Scott Henry, pergola, lyre, goblet, head, basket, kouloura, smart Dyson

  • Does spacing between rows impact performance negatively?

    • Yes. If it is narrower than 2.4 meters you might need to use multiple cameras for the same row on different heights. Height depends on the training method of the vines.

  • Can we upgrade Yield Estimator to Disease Spotter?

    • It can be upgraded to late stage mildew detection.

  • Does having multiple vineyards increase price?

    • If they have the same row spacing, height (+/- 20cm), age (above 10, +/- 3), training method, grape type & color then it will not. You'll be charged from hectares.

  • We don’t have electricity or internet in the field, does the system still work?

    • Only Edge version, powered from the alternator from your tractor or external batteries.

  • Why do we need internet connection in the field?

    • You don’t need 24/7 internet access. It is required for model updates and remote operations.

  • Which vehicle is the best for Flash?

    • ATV, Tractor (preferably Antonio Carraro TRX series), Fiat Panda 4x4.

  • Can we upgrade Edge to Industrial, Flash to Industrial, day operations to night operations, night operations to day operations? 

  • Do you have exclusive deals?

    • Yes, but, anyone wants to use Tarsens Yield Estimator will use it. You can provide a service but that doesn't mean you are going to be only one doing that because our experience shown that management of field teams not easy in a really short duration of 2 months for thousands of hectare of land.

  • Which grape varieties you can count?

    • If they are on a trellis system with a VSP we can count these
